On Alumni Weekend (May 11- 13), PennDesign hosted a talk on Cuban art and architecture, a special year end happy hour and a brunch for 1970's and 1980's architecture graduates. In all we welcomed back over 150 alumni from the School of Design.
On Friday, May 11, the Kroiz Gallery of the Architectural Archives hosted a talk with Architect and PennDesign alumnus Belmont Freeman (GFA’76) and artist Gabriel Martinez, senior lecturer in photography in the Department of Fine Arts at PennDesign. Set within the exhibition Mario Romañach: Do You Love Architecture? both presentations focused on life, art and architecture in Cuba today. We had a full house, and a great time. After this, many alumni joined the party at Meyerson to to celebrate the work of PennDesign students through our MFA Thesis Exhibition and our Year End Show and Happy Hour.
On Saturday, May 12, PennDesign hosted a special brunch and tour of Hill College House with David Hollenberg, MArch'75, University Architect and Adjunct Professor in Historic Preservation for a group of architecture alumni, many of whom were celebrating their 40 year + reunions.
We invite you to watch this slide show of PennDesign memories of the 1970's and 1980's, a collaboration of those instrumental in organizing the brunch, Jeff Fine MArch '78, Richard Farley, MArch '73 and Perry Benson, MArch '73 and Michael Kihn, MArch '73.
MIchael Kihn told us that such gatherings are an opportunity "to rekindle friendships and revive the spirit of learning and discovery that pervaded the School in our time." We're so glad to see our alumni, all throughout the year, all around the world.
PennDesign Overseer and Alum, Jeff Fine, MArch '78 shared these thoughts, "Seeing old friends was very special. What amazed me most was the common recollections we had of our time together. I would start telling a story and someone else would finish it recalling the exact same conversation we had forty years ago. I really wanted to catch up with the close friends I made during my time at Penn architecture. It was a very intense time for us all. We spent 15 hours of each day over a three year period together in studio which developed friendships and relationships that have lasted over four decades."
